Dearest Sherri and Maddie ... thank you ... thank you ... for stopping by and wishing Sammy a Happy 17th Birthday.

I gave Sammy that birthday because it was 17 years ago that "we found one another" .. so I gave him this beautiful day for his Birthday.

Today started with thoughts of Sammy and then the tears .. but then I knew he was happy and healthy and able to run and play with Maddie and all his friends at Rainbow Bridge.

Today, Cupcake, Xander and I will celebrate Sammy's birthday with a joy ride in the truck that Sammy loved to go riding in ..and perhaps a McDonald's cheeseburger .. all in honor of my beloved son Sammy.

Sherri .. thank you so much for friendship and for remembering Sammy's birthday.

Home At Last

The trees were blowing in the gentle breeze
the sun was shining thru the leaves on the trees
The meadows are green; and the grass grows tall
off in the distance; you can see a waterfall

Over the falls; down through the creek
the water flows gently; as a rabbit sneaks a peek
Far up above; in the deep blue sky
the birds soar high; as they fly by

The animals play;
at the bridge by the waterfall chasing each other;
and just having a ball
They play all day; from morning to night
there's no more rain; just warm sunlight

Off in the distance; the trumpets would blow
all would look up; and notice a bright glow
The harps would play; and the angels would sing
as another pet has come home; who had earned his wings

Sherri,

I smiled as I read your message because you have had furkids in your life much longer than I. You have much more experience. I adopted my first maltese Ernie (2001) after my only child, my son, Marcel left the nest for college. In essense it took four maltese, which I had by 2003) to fill Marcel's " empty nest"!I was lucky that when I adopted Ernie...about 3 months after...I had the chance to go to a seminar about pet health and nutrition, which was given by  Martin Goldstein DVM. I did not know at the time of how important a role Dr. Goldstein has played in the holistic field of animal care. I remember at the time Ernie was always itching ...he had been on Eukanuba and Science food, which I thought was a quality food. Well I learnt otherwise! Plus Dr.Goldstein  made me aware of the vaccination risks. I could not believe that the well known show breeder in Florida from whom I adopted Ernie at age 5 1/2 months had given him 5 rounds of the 5 virus shots plus rabies by age 5 months old...his little immune system was injected with 26 viruses! Ernie developed autoimmune hemolytic anemia in Feb 08 . During his entire life with me, he had one vaccination for rabies because we had to travel by plane. And I tell you I did not want to give him that rabies vaccine because I am so terrified of the risk to their immune systems. I just recently read in my maltese chat room of a maltese parent giving his maltese the rabies shot and by the 30th day the maltese developed autoimmune hemolytic anemia. The vet recognized it was related to the vaccine. When I contacted Ernie's breed in Florida about Ernie's autoimmune disease, she emailed back and said it was "common" in maltese and the result of boosters. Well, I didn't give boosters...only the one rabies. In Ernie's case I have to believe his immune system was compromised in puppyhood with his multiple shots.

Too make a long story short, once I learned from Martin Goldstein  about nutrition for our pets health and the damage of vaccinations, I just continued my quest to learn as much as I could. So I have fed premium dog food, plus added meals of veggies/lean protein and avoided boosters...and spanned out the rabies shots beyond 3 years. I keep my pack away from other dogs. When Ernie was diagnosed with this fatal disease in Feb 08,  and Annie in August 08, I was devestated...doubly devestated because I was following the holistic route. I backtracked trying to figure out what went wrong. My Wolfie had the same food and care as they did and he was not ill. Was it the soy in Newman's own organic that caused it? Was it the garlic in the Innova ? Was it the move we had that November...the stress of it? Was it the new puppy I adopted in Jan08..too much stress for 11 year old Annie and 7 year old Ernie? Was it a bee sting? A tick bite? There are so many factors to this autoimmune disease including genetic factors of possible inbreeding done with purebred dogs. Interestingly, Wolfie is the only maltese in my four pack that did not come from well known showbreeders. And of all of them, he is the one who never seems to have any issues ...he is a hearty eater and I can't remember the last time he a tummy problem! Sometimes it seems no matter what we do, we just can't control all the verables that come up to keep our beloved pets healthy and living the long life we wish for them. I am lucky Ernie is in remission now over 2 years...but I am always on that anxious watch ...thinking everytime he is not feeling up to paar his illness is back.

Anyway, to get back to your grooming question. Next time you go to your vet  have him show you have to express the glands. You have to invision the little butt "hole" being a clock. You put one figer on 3 o'clock the other at 9'o clock...you will feel 2 little "balls" that are filled with liquid, which you will squeeze to release. Now the stuff can squirt out , so you will need to have some tissue to catch it. Recently, I did Daisy's glands and it squirted streight in my face (shower time for me). As for the nails..like ours you don't want to get close to the quick, the pink area, as that will cause bleeding. I usually sit on the floor and have them in my lap facing me then slowly do each nail...when I began I gave small pieces of chicken breast treats so they would associate the nail cutting positively. Bennie was ok until I had the vet do it when he was neutered and somehow he must of had a bad experience because he is now fearful. So I am working on him trusting me with the nail clipping again.

You might want to next time you go to petsmart  watch the groomers clip hair...I learned quite a bit just watching and observing them...I also see how terrified the doggies are, another reason I do my own grooming!

By the way I now use Castor and Pollux Organix an organic dog food. A couple of weeks ago, I added 6 fish formula Orijen (non grain) because so many maltese parents in my chat room raved about how much their dogs loved it. Both are premium foods. Natural Balance fish and sweet potatoe have also been a hit with us as are their fish and sweet potatoe cookies. Petco has a holistic /premium dog food section, which carries foods that Petsmart doesn't have.

Well I'd better close this long message, my four pack want to go for our afternoon stroll. Happy Valentine's Day to you and your loved ones. The love you have for Maddie and I for Annie stays alive through our love for those who are with us everyday. We honor them by sharing the love we have for them with our adopted furkids. Fondly, Cornelia and my four pack!

For their teeth I buy Merrick all natural flossies online.

Happy Valentines day M addie It's my selfishness

that makes me cry.
I wasn't ready
to say good-bye.

I wasn't ready
to let you go.
I pray you know
I loved you so.

It's me, not you
who suffers here.
I know you're life
goes on, somewhere.

I know that I should
celebrate.
You've walked through
Heaven's glorious gate.

But, still I can't stop
thinking of,
your smile, your touch,
your special love.

I know that you hear
what I say.
It's just done in a
different way.

And, so I want to
send you this~
to you, the one
I love and miss~

All my love upon an
Angel's Kiss.

A Valentine for Sherri from Maddie- Happy Valentines Day!

A Valentine from your Pet-

 Here's a candy along with a kiss,
this Valentine's day I was sure not to miss.

The candy, hearts and perhaps a bone,
each year with my friend that's all I have known.

The hugs and love that you and I shared,
this day without me you alone have beared.

I am your valentine that lights up the sky,
the butterfly in the heavens learning to fly.

I wear a red ribbon on my collar I adore,
makes me feel comfort and feel you once more.

This ribbon I treasure and have from the start,
it bears your picture & smile in my heart

So always be happy and know I am fine,
I wear a ribbon that holds my valentine.

My valentine's love will never cease to be,
just like our bond until eternity.

So here is your Valentine I said from the start,
a picture of you I have engraved in my heart.

Hi Sherri and Maddie. I am doing better, the swelling is going down and I am getting more movment but my thumb and wrist are still not moving to well. I started therapy but they are not doing too much yet as it is still too early. I am only going outside if there is no ice except for Doc. appointments as I do not want to fall on it again. Even though we have gotten very little snow I definitly can't wait for spring..
