'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, except Luna and a mouse;
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there;
Luke, Sammy, KC and Bob M were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of bbq chicken and ice cream danced in their heads;
And Butler's mamma in her 'motorcycle helmet , and I in my goggles ,
Had just settled down for a long winter's nap,
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.
The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below,
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature dog , and eight tiny reindeer,
Without a driver geesh what a jip,
I knew in a moment it was not St. Nick.
More rapid than eagles her coursers they came,
"What gives I asked and what is your name?"
And she whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;
"Now, Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen!
On, Comet! on Cupid! on, Donder and Blitzen!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!"
As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky,
So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,
With the sleigh full of toys, and the little dog too.
And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
As I drew in my head, and was turning around,
Down the chimney the little dog came with a bound.
She was dressed all in fur, from her head to her foot,
And her clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;
A bundle of toys she had flung on her back,
And she looked like a peddler just opening her pack.
Her eyes -- how they twinkled! her dimples how merry!
Her cheeks were like roses, her nose like a cherry!
Her droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard of her chin was as white as the snow;
(wait, wait beard, her? )
The stump of a pipe she held tight in her teeth,
And the smoke it encircled her head like a wreath;
She had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook, when she laughed like a bowlful of jelly.
She was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw her, in spite of myself;
A wink of her eye and a twist of her head,
I said "ok I know who this is...LUNA go back to bed"
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;
She spoke " we have the sleigh til noon it's rented, but has to be back Monday when my mom works,"
And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,
And laying her finger aside of her nose,
And giving a nod, up Luke, Sammy Bob M and KC awoke;
"Is it Santa they"? asked me. I said no it's Luna pulling a joke
But we have a sleigh let's go I will drive"
They sprang to the sleigh, to the team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
Actually like down of a chimney which Butler upon takeoff happened to clip
As they watched the chimney teeter then fall
Butler exclaimed as they flew out of sight
"I only hit the chimney a tad...oops my bad"
