Daisey's favorite outfit
Mommy retired two months after Daisey became part of our family. Mommy has multiple sclerosis and can’t get around very well. As much as Daisey loved Eliana – and Eliana loved Daisey – Daisey became Mommy’s constant companion. She just seemed to sense that Mommy needed extra comfort and companionship. Daisey spent her days sitting behind Mommy in her desk chair, which wasn’t very comfortable for Mommy because she couldn’t lean back, but she really didn’t mind very much. Daisey took a long nap with Mommy every afternoon, lying at the foot of the bed so Mommy couldn’t stretch her legs out at all, but Mommy didn’t mind that very much, either. Daisey would lie next to Mommy when she meditated, and when Mommy did her yoga stretches, Daisey would go through her own series of stretches on the floor right next to Mommy. Daisey never missed going for a ride in the car, but she especially loved to zip around town on Mommy’s mobility scooter. You could just tell that Daisey thought she was better than all those other dogs who didn’t have a mom with a scooter!
After school Eliana would take Daisey out for a good, long run and a romp in the playground. Daisey’s favorite thing was the circular slide; she’d run up the steps and slide down and around, over and over and over again. The kids always bought her candy when Mommy wasn’t looking (but never chocolate – they knew that wasn’t good for dogs). Her favorite was Skittles.
Our family is all vegetarians; we love animals too much to eat them. Daisey learned to be a vegetarian too. Her absolute favorite was corn on the cob. We’d give her our cobs and she’d take them out to the back yard. When she was done with them she’d bury them in the corner of the yard the way other dogs bury bones.
Daisey LOVED to dress up. She had a drawer full of shirts, bandanas, and winter pajamas. If the drawer was open she’d take out a shirt and toss it onto Mommy’s lap, then sit up and beg. Sometimes when she saw Mommy getting dressed she’d sit up and beg– to let Mommy know that she wanted to get dressed too. Her favorite outfit was a brightly colored dinosaur suit with a tail that stuck out in the back over Daisey’s tail. She loved to go out in that outfit and show off to all the other dogs who didn’t have clothes to wear.
Just before we got Daisey, we found a newborn kitten in a rainstorm. We named her Rayne. Daisey and Rayne loved to play together, but they were also always rivals for Mommy’s affection. The funniest incident we can remember is when Daisey ran up behind Rayne and stuck her head right under Rayne’s behind. Rayne’s back end was sitting on Daisey’s head, with one leg hanging down on each side. Rayne tried to run away with her front legs but Daisey kept up, so they were running around the living room with Rayne’s back end on Daisey’s head. Rayne doesn’t laugh when she remembers, and she hopes the rest of us have forgotten.
